While researching this article, I came across another proclaiming Hong Kong as a "Winter Wonderland". Needless to say, I was curious, so I read it. Now you find yourself falling prey to the same sort of curiosity. Although Hong Kong is a "Winter Wonderland" in the nontraditional sense, you'll find no snow skiing at any of the resorts. As a matter of fact, you probably won't even see any snow . . . . . ever. There are many things to discover in Hong Kong, but before they can be discussed you'll need a little bit of background on this intriguing corner of the world. Hong Kong is a British Colony located on the southern coast of China. It was transferred to Britain in 1842 after defeating China in the Opium Wars. In 1984 China and Britain signed a joint declaration under which China would resume control of Hong Kong in 1997. In return, China promised to grant a high degree of autonomy, allowing capitalism and the inhabitants’ life-style to continue undisturbed until the year 2047. Hong Kong consists mainly of low-lying hills. Only 8% of the land is suitable for agriculture. The highest point is Tai Mo Shan, north of Kowloon, which rises to an elevation of 3,140 feet. A plain in the northwestern part of the New Territories extends to the Shenzhen River, forming the boundary between Hong Kong and China. There are few natural springs or rivers, and seventy percent of the freshwater supply is piped in from China. The rest comes from rainwater reservoirs. Hong Kong is hot and humid in the summer (average temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit) and cooler in winter (average temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit). Annual rainfall averages 87 inches, with most falling during summer. Hong Kong is one of the most crowded areas of the world, with a population density of 14,005 people per square mile. English is the principal language of government, and Cantonese is the everyday language. Hong Kong was originally acquired by Britain because of magnificent Victoria Harbor. It remains as the main gateway for Western commerce with China. After 1949, businessmen set up many new industries, utilizing cheap refugee labor. Hong Kong’s success in exportingattracted substantial investment by American and Japanese businesses. Hong Kong is also the second largest banking center in the Pacific (after Tokyo). In 1989, over 5 million tourists visited Hong Kong. Traveling in Hong Kong Hong Kong’s winter season is an exceptional time to visit. The climate is pleasant and there are many events and activities. The most popular attraction in Hong Kong remains it's Shopping! Winter is the "Sale" season in Hong Kong, with great bargains to be found everywhere. Some of the world’s best bargains are found here and fortunately, most shops and markets accept major credit cards. Fabulous Food Winter is also a time for seasonal foods and feasts. Ethnic delicacies include pressed duck (dried and pressed flat like a pancake), live crab (which is bound with bamboo twine), black sausage and Snake, which reportedly keeps the body warm, possess medicinal qualities, and helps enhance a man’s virility. Sports and Recreation Sports-enthusiasts will love Hong Kong's walking, hiking, golf and tennis. Horse racing season begins in September and runs through June. Cultural Exploring For the do-it-yourself explorer, Hong Kong offers the Central And Western District Heritage Trail. Put on your walking shoes and then stop by one of the Hong Kong Tourist Association’s offices and pick up a free copy of the Central And Western District Heritage Trail Guide. By following the trail, you will discover many of Hong Kong's old and new attractions. The Western District is home to much 19th and 20th century traditional Chinese architecture. You will pass the Western Market, opened in 1858 and once the social center of the district. It contains many shops and restaurants. The trail continues on to Hollywood Road which features many traditional Chinese shops, historic Tung Wah Hospital, and the Chinese temples of Pak Shing and Man Mo. There are also many antiques shops to be found in this area. This section of the trail ends with a steep descent down Pottinger Street, one of Hong Kong’s first paved roads. At the bottom you will find the Central District, which features western-influenced architecture that dates back to the 19th century. This is an excellent spot to take a break and enjoy a snack in the Lan Kwai Fong area. Here you will find a wide variety of restaurants and bars that offer Chinese and Western food. As you continue down the trail, you will pass through the "Theatre District" and past the Bishop’s House, which dates back to 1848, with it’s famous 19th century "Gas Lamps". The trail continues past the site of one of the area’s first fixed artillery defense sites. As you continue downhill, you will catch a spectacular view of the area’s "colonial" architecture including the French Mission Building, Government House, the Legislative Council Building and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware (located next to Hong Kong Park). At the park, the contrast of old and new architecture is very apparent. From here you have easy access to the city’s mass transit systems for further exploration to Hong Kong's other sites. The entire trail takes about three and one half hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Many tourists also visit Po Lin Monastery which is home to the world’s largest outdoor bronze Buddha, which sits on a mountain top at Lantau Island. In addition, there are many other trails that allow you to explore ancient historical sites, parks, shopping centers and breathtaking scenery. The Hong Kong Tourist Association organizes half and full-day "Heritage Tours" that explore relics of the past that are found in less-accessible parts of the countryside. Tours can be arranged at any of their offices. Vagabond Cruise & Travel is currently hosting a group tour to Hong Kong. Born from a 2,000 mile volcanic fault at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, they are hundreds of thousands of years old. The entire chain stretches over 1500 miles and includes eight major islands including Nihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Hawaii and Maui. Kahoolawe is uninhabited and is used primarily for target practice by the U.S. Navy and Air Force. Littered with unexploded shells, no one is allowed to visit without permission. Maui, known as the "Valley Isle", is home to Haleakala, the worlds largest dormant volcano. In Hawaii, volcanos are thought to be the home of the fire goddess Pele. In ancient times, she was thought to dwell in Diamond Head volcano on Oahu, before it disintegrated in a giant explosion. WHALE WATCHING From December through March, humpback whales migrate from the Alaska Arctic regions to the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean to give birth. Maui's southern coast is one of the best spotting locations. Dozens of whale-watching cruises are available at Lahaina and Ma'alaea harbors. It is a tremendous thrill to encounter a mother humpback with her newborn calf! HISTORIC LAHAINA During the 19th century, Lahaina was the whaling capital of the world. Sailors frequently roamed the streets, thoroughly enjoying shore leave. Many of the town's historic sites, including Baldwin Home Museum, Carthaginian II and Wo Hing Temple, have been restored. Every Friday evening is "Art Night", when the town galleries feature special showings, discussions and demonstrations by local artists. SPECTACULAR BEACHES Maui is home to thirty-three miles of spectacular beaches. Ulua beach, which was named one of the top 10 beaches in the United States, features soft sand, beautiful scenery, excellent swimming and snorkeling, and solitude. Other beaches include Napili, Ka'anapali, Kama'ole, and Ho'okipa, which features great wind-surfing. HEAVENLY HANA The town of Hana is on the eastern coast of the island. It features magnificent scenery, waterfalls, thick forests, tropical flowers, and sparkling pools; all just a few feet from the road. You can catch a fifteen minute flight from Kahului Airport or rent a car and make the 55 mile drive along the spectacular coastline, which is definitely worth the effort. GREAT GOLF Maui features over a dozen courses, including the Bay Course in Kapalua. It's signature fifth hole features a 205-yard shot across an ocean inlet. Wailea's Orange Course features unique hazards including lava rock formations and stone walls dating back centuries. SENSATIONAL SUNRISES If you're an early riser that loves adventure, set your alarm clock for 3:00 a.m. and head for the summit of Haleakala volcano. You'll arrive just in time to experience the beauty of a Maui sunrise. Dress warm and bring some coffee to sip while witnessing the beginning of another beautiful Maui day. A native Hawaiian slogan says it best: "Maui No Ka 'Oi" which means "Maui is the best!". The mood is casual and free- spirited, inviting you to relax, explore, and absorb the tranquillity. Located on the southernmost point of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, approximately 1,000 miles from the U.S. border, Los Cabos is composed of two villages - San Jose del Cabo (St. Joseph of the Cape) and Cabo San Lucas (The Cape of St. Luke), linked together by 20 miles of beach. San Jose, founded in 1730, is the older of the two villages. A Spanish Colonial influence can be seen in its tree-shaded plazas and Spanish-style churches. In addition, it boasts a variety of new tourist resorts and a challenging and scenic golf course. Cabo San Lucas, or "Cabo," as it is commonly referred, curves around a half-moon shaped harbor which the village centers around. Many hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shops line the harbor, which also features a 300-slip marina, making it a popular launch point for various boating excursions. From this harbor you can sail into the sea where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez converge, or ride in a glass bottom boat where you view colorful fish and watch manta rays glide past. In the winter, thousands of gray whales migrate south to the warm waters in the Sea of Cortez. Many whale watching expeditions take you almost within touching distance of these giant mammals. At times dolphins and porpoise can also be seen swimming alongside the boats. The Los Cabos terrain is semitropical desert incorporated with beautiful mountains. The area generates a sense of space and openness. You can take jeep rides in the desert, ride horses along seaside trails, or drive along the coastline admiring the variety of beautiful beaches. Punta Mirador is popular among surfing enthusiasts, while Playa Palmilla is excellent for swimming and snorkeling. The history of Los Cabos dates back to the 1500's when it served as a hideout for pirates who laid in wait for Spanish galleons sailing from the Philippine Islands to Mexico. The first Europeans to visit the southern part of the Baja Peninsula were led by conquistador Hernán Cortés in the late 16th century. Until a few decades ago when a road into the area was built, the only travelers who visited Los Cabos were millionaires who arrived by yacht or private plane. Celebrities such as John Wayne were attracted by the abundant big game fish found in the warm ocean waters. Rated by experts as one of the top five fishing spots in the world, Los Cabos is home to marlin, sailfish, tuna and dorado. Catch and release fishing is locally promoted, helping to preserve the ocean’s natural resources. The most popular fishing months are June through October each year. Watersport enthusiasts have many sporting activities to choose from in Los Cabos: sailing, surfing, snorkeling, windsurfing, scuba diving and parasailing. Los Cabos restaurants are an absolute delight, offering fresh seafood, numerous international cuisines, and romantic settings. All in all Los Cabos is a wonderful destination. Its climate is dry and warm but cooled by soothing ocean breezes. Temperatures average 72 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer. Visitors are treated with hospitality and warmth. The English language is widely spoken and U.S. dollars are always accepted. Dress is casual, making it easy for you to toss your favorite beachwear in a bag and head for paradise. Vagabond Cruise & Travel has regular cruise groups to Cabo as well as many other worldwide destinations. Therefore, it is important for potential travelers to carefully plan and implement their travel arrangements in order to maximize your body's performance and minimize fatigue. Some very helpful hints include: * VISIT YOUR PHYSICIAN. Your physician can advise you on any medications and immunizations you may need before your trip. Purchase all preventative medications (anti-histhemines, cough suppressants, etc.) before departing, as these products may not be available at your destination. * REQUEST A QUIET ROOM. Ask your travel agent to request a quiet room at your hotel. This will enable you to get much needed rest during your first couple of days. Also ask if the hotel has fitness facilities or nearby trails, jogging tracks or beaches that lend themselves to exercise walking. This will help your body remain alert and at peak performance. * MAKE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS. Seek professional assistance from a qualified travel agent when making flight, hotel, cruise, car rental and other reservations. Chances are, the agency has personnel experienced in travel to your destination of choice. Travel Agents are paid by airlines and travel providers and their services are free to the traveler. They will make sure you have the proper flight schedules, documents and traveling papers (Visa, Birth Certificate, etc.). Try to avoid flights that require all-night travel and request an Aisle seat so that you can stretch out or easily get up for a walk. * PACK A "CARE PACKAGE". Be sure and pack all medications, pain relievers, snacks and other necessities in your "carry-on" luggage. This makes these items easily accessible. It also guarantees that you will have these necessities if your luggage is lost or delayed. It may not seem possible that a musical such as "Phantom of the Opera" would require, much less command, a great amount of "hype" from the city of San Francisco. But "hype" is exactly what "Phantom" is receiving. The Sunday edition of the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner featured a full-page "Phantom" ad. At the 49ers / Rams football game, the National Anthem was performed by "The Cast Of 'The Phantom of the Opera'". Welcome to "Phantomania". "Phantom" was the creation of the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, an English composer who was born March 22, 1948. He is one of the most commercially successful and controversial figures in modern theatrical music. He created such pieces as Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), Evita (1978) featuring the song "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina", Cats (1981), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1967), and many others. Phantom of the Opera, a 1986 London success, subsequently opened in New York and won seven Tony awards. Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II. Vagabond Travel has assembled it's own "Phantom Of The Opera" Travel package. If you are interested in attending a performance, please see the enclosed "Travel Bargains" insert or contact Colleen Walton at Vagabond Travel for an application. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
